This module introduces key physiological concepts—perfusion (blood delivery to tissues) and diffusion (gas movement across membranes)—as the foundation of ECMO’s function, illustrating how ECMO facilitates perfusion and gas exchange when heart or lung function is compromised. It distinguishes between VA ECMO, which supports both heart and lungs, and VV ECMO, which supports only the lungs, and addresses advanced and hybrid cannulation strategies for complex cases. The module also examines ECMO’s hemodynamic effects, such as changes in preload, afterload, and complications like Harlequin syndrome, while encouraging learners to integrate technical knowledge with reflective practice to effectively manage the unique challenges of pediatric ECMO.

At the completion of lesson you will be able to:
1. Describe the essential collaboration between the cardiac and pulmonary systems for effective cardiopulmonary physiology.
2. Recognize the impact of congenital cardiac defects and illness on achieving physiological balance, especially in pediatric patients.
3. Explain the principles of perfusion and diffusion as they relate to ECMO function.
4. Differentiate between VA and VV ECMO modes, including their indications and physiological effects.
5. Identify advanced and hybrid ECMO cannulation strategies and their clinical applications.
6. Analyze the hemodynamic effects of ECMO, including changes in preload, afterload, and the potential for complications such as Harlequin syndrome.
7. Apply reflective and adaptive thinking—symbolized by the meditative figure and octopus—to address the complexity and challenges of ECMO management in clinical practice.

Expected time to complete this class: 50 minutes.
