This module provides a comprehensive review of the blood to circuit interaction during extracorporeal membrane support. The learner will be provided knowledge to assess patient safety corresponding to circuit health for veno venous and veno arterial ECMO in the pediatric population.


At the conclusion of this course, the learner will be able to:

Identify the inflammatory response and clotting pathways exhibited when blood comes into contact with the foreign surface of ECMO circuitry.

Describe common locations of clot formation in the ECMO circuit pathway.

Categorize how ECMO impacts blood components.

Explain pre-existing hypercoagulable states prior to ECMO support.

Recognize signs of declining circuit health to apply corrective actions.

Expected time of completion is 50 minutes.
