Course description: This learning module will review common terminology utilized while functioning in the role of a pediatric ECMO specialist. The course will review concepts such as modes of ECMO, equipment utilized, and circuit parameters. Finally this class will define cardiac anomalies associated with pediatric patients


At the completion of this class the learner will be able to:

1. Describe the difference between VV and VA ECMO in an infant and using an X-ray determine if a child needs to be placed on ECMO.

2. Describe various cannula types, insertion sites and placement techniques.

3. Explore the meaning of various circuit pressures; venous pressure, pre-oxygenator pressure, post oxygenator pressure and Delta P.

4. Define OI, VO2, DO2, SvO2, FiO2, CaO2, and FDO2 and describe the importance of each in evaluating the patient and circuit.

5. Identify medical term pathology for septal defects, left and right sided obstructions, pulmonary artery obstructions, Great Vessel Anomalies, Venous anomalies and other miscellaneous terms.
