Coagulation management may be one of the most challenging aspects to extracorporeal support. In this module, learners will be able to describe the coagulation cascade, identify coagulation disorders that are commonly discovered while on extracorporeal support and how to manage patients who may be at risk of thrombosis or hemorrhage.


At the completion of this lesson the learner will be able to:

1. Describe how anticoagulation works in an ECMO circuit.

2. Discuss available primary anticoagulants and their mechanism of action.

3. Describe anticoagulation tests that are available.

4. Describe coagulation factor disorders and how they impact ECLS.

5. Categorize blood components and available recombinant products.


This course should take approximately 50 minutes to complete.
