In this module we will discuss and explain the critical steps of supporting a patient on ECMO. We will transition through the key aspects of placing a patient on ECMO from mode of ECMO, cannula selection, cannulation site, and desired flow. We will then focus on the important details one in aware of when preparing to wean a patient from ECMO support. This module will streamline the decision tree with respect to caring for a patient on ECMO from initiation to successful decannulation.


At the completion of this course the learner will be able to:

1. Determine the appropriate circuit and cannulation strategy.


2. Prepare and complete your initial cognitive checklist.


3. Monitor the ECMO circuit and patient parameters.


4. Monitor various patient parameters.


5. Prepare to wean the patient from ECMO support.

Expected time to complete this class: 50 minutes.
